On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Core Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
