Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress Following Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the flight.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
